Nomination: Digital Artist’s Film
Timing 20:22
The film is based on Franz Kafka’s “The Trial”. The film features non-professional actors from the inclusive studio “Kvadrat”, the charitable foundation “Life’s Path”, with the support of the Jewish Museum and the Tolerance Center.
Sergei Katran’s studio was able to change the appearance of actors, create interiors and the corresponding atmosphere thanks to the Ranway neural network. We offered the “AI” to transform the footage shot in the tiny center of the theater studio into the gloomy and absurd world of Franz Kafka. In each of the actors, you will be able to recognize the external features of the famous and mysterious writer. It was particularly fortunate, for example, that the dialogue filmed in the kitchen between Josef K. and the prison chaplain “AI” transformed the kitchen into a huge Gothic cathedral.
We did not have to choose between “b/w or color” because the aesthetics of the work, its dramaturgy, multiplied by the modern context, left us with no other color solution. However, the visual color poverty of the film is contrasted with the major richness of Johann Strauss’s music.
