Laugh in the Rye // 2025

Installation: Sergey Katran

Sound Art: Oleg Makarov

There are certain phrases that seem destined to become proverbial. “Laugh in the Rye!” is one of them, begging to take on such a life of its own. But what does it mean in the context of an installation shaped as a pentagon — five timeworn sofas forming its outline, filled with several tons of first-class rye?

To “laugh in the rye” alongside the horses living in the stables of the Lenin Hills, the visitor can immerse themselves in the sound composition created by Oleg Makarov.

Woven into a furious braid of the visible, the audible, and the tactile, the installation draws the viewer inside, inviting interaction — to enlist in the sofa-army, to recline on one of the couches as usual, to plunge a hand into the depth of the grain, to encounter oneself in an absurd situation. To look up, and only then notice a leather bridle, hanging from the ceiling, swaying ever so slightly, quietly reminding us of the times when horses were free. They would race across endless plains, their sparkling manes streaming in the wind and sun, playing with one another, fearless of anything or anyone — as happens now only in dreams.
